Normally, the brain restricts one's power and shuts down muscles in response to pain in order to prevent serious injury. Fortunately, or unfortunately, Heiwajima Shizuo doesn’t have this ability, making him capable of using his full strength at will. His is the naturally unlimited form of human strength, which Kishitani Shinra likens to “adrenaline power” that people get in time of emergency.

The class representative along with Ryuugamine Mikado, Sonohara Anri is a quiet and timid girl who appears to be very close to Kida Masaomi and Mikado. Although she is aware than her two boy friends have feelings for her, she considers herself unable to feel "love" towards either of them. She is quite popular in school, but she feels rather uneasy about it.

It was revealed in the anime that Orihara Izaya actually possesses Celty Sturluson's head, which is also his main motivation for starting gang wars. Izaya wanted to “awaken” the sleeping Dullahan’s head by throwing the world around her into chaos; in hopes that he will be taken to the warrior heaven of Valhalla. He believes Celty is a Valkyrie, a Norse angel of death who chooses which warriors die in battle in order to take them to Valhalla.

Quiet and nondescript when not angered, Heiwajima Shizuo has a very short fuse and, although he claims to hate violence, has incredible strength when fighting. Despite his unrefined fighting skills with road signs, trash cans, and vending machines as his weapons of choice, he is considered to be the strongest fighter in the series. He is also capable of often superhuman parkour moves, a skill he obtained naturally from years of hunting down Orihara Izaya.
